Ganciclovir
Ganciclovir (GCV) is a pro-drug nucleoside analog that is activated by phosphorylation. It is useful in the study of gene therapy in cancer research. Upon expression of a viral suicide gene encoding thymidine kinase, the non-toxic pro-drug is converted to a phosphorylated active analog and is incorporated into the DNA of replicating eukaryotic cells, causing death of the malignant dividing cell. The cell cycle is irreversibly arrested at the G2-M checkpoint. Gap junction involvement in the ganciclovir bystander effect has been studied. Ganciclovir has been used to study loss of telomeres and to evaluate sensitivity of viruses to antiviral treatments. Ganciclovir is used in molecular biology for selection against random recombination events when homologous recombination of a gene of interest is required. Group: Biochemicals. Gefitinib, Free Base (Iressa)
EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor that binds to the ATP-binding site of the enzyme. The functions of the EGFR tyrosine kinase in activating the Ras signal transduction cascade and malignant cell growth are thus inhibited. It has been shown that a mutation in the EGFR tyrosine kinase domain is responsible for activating anti-apoptotic pathways in gefitinib-sensitive non-small cell lung cancers. These mutations tend to increase sensitivity to tyrosine kinase inhibitors including gefitinib and erlotinib. The adenocarcinoma subset of non-small cell lung cancer histologies often have these mutations, which are commonly found in Asians, women, and non-smokers. Group: Biochemicals. Gemcitabine is a nucleoside analog of deoxycytidine used as chemotherapy to treat patients with various types of cancer. After passage through the cell membrane via nucleoside transporters, gemcitabine undergoes complex intracellular conversion to gemcitabine diphosphate (dFdCDP) and triphosphate (dFdCTP). dFdCTP inhibits DNA polymerase by competing with deoxycytidine triphosphate (dCTP). dFdCDP inhibits ribonucleoside reductase and DNA synthesis by causing depletion of deoxyribonucleotide pools, and thus potentiating the effects of dFdCTP. Gemcitabine can be inactivated to 2,2'-difluorodeoxyuridine, mainly by deoxycytidine deaminase. Also, 5'-nucleotidase catalyses the conversion of nucleotides to nucleosides and inhibits nucleoside kinases. Group: Biochemicals. Gentisic Acid, Sodium Salt (Sodium Gentisate)
Gentisic acid (2,5-Dihydroxybenzoic acid; 5-hydroxysalicylic acid) is chemically related to salicylate and aspirin (acetylsalicylate) and shares with the latter agent analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Gentisic acid is an aromatic carboxylic acid used as a sample matrix in Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization Mass spectrometry. As a hydroquinone, it is readily oxidized and is used as an antioxidant excipient in some pharmaceutical preparations. In vitro stabilization of low-tin bone-imaging agents has previously been achieved with ascorbic acid. Gentisic acid is shown to be an equally effective antioxidant for the (1-hydroxyethylidene) diphosphonate (HEDP) and hydroxy methyl enediphosphonate (HMDP) skeletal agents. In vitro studies show less than 2% free sodium [99mTc] pertechnetate at 24 hr with the gentisic acid stabilizer. Studies in guinea pigs at 3 and 24 hrwhether with C-14- or H-3-labeled gentisic acid as stabilizershow no alteration in the biodistribution of either skeletal imaging agent by the addition of the gentisic acid.Gentisic acid is a safe and effective stabilizer, and clinical studies have shown bioequivalency with ascorbic acid. Glycerol (Glycerine)
Glycerol is a chemical compound also commonly called glycerin or glycerine. It is a colorless, odorless, viscous liquid that is widely used in pharmaceutical formulations. Glycerol is a sugar alcohol, and is sweet-tasting and of low toxicity. Glycerol has three hydrophilic alcoholic hydroxyl groups that are responsible for its solubility in water and its hygroscopic nature. Its surface tension is 64.00mN/m at 20°C, and it has a temperature coefficient of -0.0598mN/(mK). The glycerol substructure is a central component of many lipids.Glycerol is used both in sample preparation and gel formation for polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.
