The enzyme, found only in bacteriochlorophyll b-producing bacteria, catalyses the introduction of a C-8 ethylidene group. The enzyme contains a [4Fe-4S] cluster, and structurally resembles the Fe protein/MoFe protein complex of nitrogenase.
