The human phosphoadenosine-phosphosulfate synthase (PAPS) system is a bifunctional enzyme (fusion product of two catalytic activities). In a first step, sulfate adenylyltransferase catalyses the formation of adenosine 5'-phosphosulfate (APS) from ATP and inorganic sulfate.
